Our Story

In 2002, Mr. Franklin Kwasi Owusu conceived the idea of creating an association for Ghanaians living in and around Harford County, Maryland. He approached several Ghanaians in the community, including Mr. Douglas Okyere and Anthony Akwasi Wiafe, to discuss the need for such an association. Together, they reached out to like-minded individuals in the area and began meeting weekly at the home of Mr. Kinsley Nana Kumi-Poku, an elder in the community who welcomed them with open arms. At their initial meeting, attended by a group of individuals including Mr. Kwame Agyemang, Mr. Anthony Akwasi Wiafe, Mr. Douglas Okyere, Mr. Franklin Kwasi Owusu, Mr. Kwabena Antwi, Mr. James Eyiti, Mr. Ben Sarpong, Mr. Kinsley Nana Kumi-Poku, and Mrs. Georgina Kumi-Poku, they socialized, shared meals, and contributed money to support each other during times of financial difficulty. Over time, the group grew as members invited others and spread the word about the association.

Initially, meetings of the association were held on a weekly basis, then later switched to biweekly, and eventually to monthly. As the membership grew, meetings were relocated from Mr. Kinsley Nana Kumi-Poku’s house to the homes of volunteers. However, concerns were raised by some members regarding the size of the meetings, prompting a decision to move the gatherings to Joppatowne Christian Church. Nevertheless, many members preferred the intimate setting of house-to-house meetings and eventually, with Mr. Okyere’s assistance, a hall was secured for monthly meetings. The use of the hall contributed to an increase in membership growth, and the association now boasts over 100 members, a testament to Mr. Franklin Kwasi Owusu’s original vision.

As such, it is only prudent that we acknowledge and credit the following visionary personalities who have acted as the pioneers of the Ghana Unity Association of Maryland; Mr. Franklin Akwasi Owusu, Mr. Kingsley Nana Kumi-Poku, Mr. Anthony Akwasi Wiafe, Mr. Douglas Okyere, Mr. Kwame Agyemang, and Mr. Kwabena Antwi.
